MUNCIE, Ind. — Former Ball State football player Wendell Brown received a four-year sentence from a Chinese court late Wednesday night, according to multiple reports.
After traveling to China to teach football, Brown was involved in a bar altercation in September 2016 in which a bottle was thrown at him.
He claims he was attacked and defended himself. A Chinese man accused Brown of injuring his eye, which Brown denied.
Brown, who had a trial in July 2017, has been detained in China for the last 20 months before Wednesday's verdict in Chongqing. It isn't clear whether that will count towards his sentence.
