MUNCIE, Ind. — Saturday night wasn't unfamiliar for Delta boys basketball, but it felt different.
For the first time since 2015, the Eagles were underdogs entering the Delaware County tournament. Their 4-7 record prior to Wednesday's first round was the worst in the field, and although they played arguably the hardest schedule, the team wasn't clicking like it had in previous years.
Yet head coach Mark Detweiler's group rose to the occasion, playing their best basketball of the season to win 59-54 over Wapahani (10-3) for the program's fifth county championship in the last seven years. It was Detweiler's third, and he said 2022's title feels different because of the harder road this team's gone through.
