VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, N.C. -- Ball State men’s golfer Johnny Watts opened with a 2-under par 69 to grab the first-round lead Friday at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate.
The Cardinals are sixth as a team after a score of 298 (+14). Xavier (288) leads the way, followed by Elon (292) and Austin Peay (293). Marshall and Belmont share fourth place, one shot ahead of Ball State.
Watts carded four birdies and a double bogey Friday on the No. 8 course at Pinehurst. He holds a one-stroke lead over Xavier's Daniel Wetterich on the individual leaderboard.
