The much-hyped No. 1 vs. No. 1 clash started off well enough for Skyler Van Note. The Wapahani sophomore solo blocked Yorktown’s star freshman, Kenzie Knuckles. Then she tallied a kill. The Raiders, undefeated through six matches and the top-ranked team in Class 2A, were hanging with Yorktown, Class 3A’s top team, trailing just 13-10.
Then Van Note jumped for a block and landed on a teammate’s foot, rolling her left ankle. After a timeout, she tried to make it back onto the court and continue playing.
“It wasn’t anyone else’s fault, though, it was my fault,” she says now.
