MUNCIE, Ind. — When Ishmael El-Amin first saw the video of the death of a 46-year-old black man named George Floyd on May 25 in the custody of Minneapolis police, El-Amin dropped his phone.
El-Amin, a Minneapolis native who is also black, couldn’t believe what he was looking at. The 21-year-old, who plays basketball for Ball State University, couldn’t believe he was watching another person of color die at the hands of law enforcement. He felt angry, sad, frightened, with the intensity of his emotions growing as more details of the tragedy emerged.
