Taking nothing for granted, Yorktown football eagerly awaits its season opener

MUNCIE, Ind. — Yorktown football coach Mike Wilhelm doesn’t need anyone to remind him of what it means to be out on the field with his athletes again.

Wilhelm, entering his 16th season leading the Tigers, has watched COVID-19 dominate the conversation on the news, social media and elsewhere. He’s experienced extensively the cliche, “You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.” And in his time away from his team, a newfound appreciation for the opportunity he has as a coach has been instilled in him.

But while uncertainty remains, and will continue to remain, in the consciousness of athletes and coaches alike as the fall progresses, a significant step toward normalcy is scheduled to occur Friday.
