MUNCIE — Sleep has been hard to come by for the last eight weeks.
Ball State women's volleyball coach Steve Shondell says it wasn't until he went on vacation in California — and still couldn't get any shut eye — that he knew for sure it was time. His mind and body wanted to come back, he says, but his heart was pushing him in another direction.
The thought of competing for top recruits and the thought of coming back as his team loses six key players, it was all just a bit too much.
"I've always told my teams to follow their hearts, and I really needed to step away from the heat of battle," the 61-year-old coach said Monday, after his retirement was announced.
