CARMEL, Ind. — At first, New Castle’s Derek Tabor and Dillon Bergum were just happy to be there.
Qualifying for the IHSAA boys state golf finals a week earlier at the Muncie Central regional, that was their message: the two juniors were content with being among the individual golfers to compete at the state finals.
Making it to state was the goal, but as they prepared they wanted to prove they were among the state's best. New Castle has had only handful of golfers qualify for state over the past decade, with the best result being Blake Wheeler, who finished 39th in 2015.
