PORTLAND — People tend to think that Jay County is where Jerry Bomholt's head coaching career — one that now spans four decades — began.
Yes, Bomholt's first full year as a head coach was at Jay County during the 1980-81 season, but his first head coaching experience came at Anderson Highland the year before. There, Bomholt was named the interim coach after legendary coach Bob Fuller died of a heart attack at halftime of a game at Lapel High School on Jan. 11, 1980. School administration decided not to bring Bomholt back after he helped the team finish with a 23-1 record and a sectional championship.
