LAPEL, Ind. — For a time on Monday, it seemed as if the sectional championship game would serve as a passing of the torch. Wapahani, the program with two state finals appearances in the last five years, giving way to a young, upstart Monroe Central squad.
The Class 2A No. 3 Golden Bears led early but ultimately fell just a little short in a 4-3 loss. But as you can imagine, the future is very bright for a program that went 21-5 while starting five freshmen and a sophomore. The entire starting infield — shortstop Ashton Bandy, second basemen Aidyn Coffey, third baseman Joel Kennedy and first baseman Caleb Snyder — was made up of freshmen.
