MUNCIE, Ind. — Hundreds of people are expected to visit McCulloch Park this weekend, Friday through Sunday, for the fourth annual Stop the Violence Summer Basketball Classic.
It’s come a long way from its first year in terms of attendance, but Jerel Jernigan’s mission for it has always remained the same. The Muncie native and Muncie Central graduate, now an assistant coach for North Iowa Area Community College, wants to have a weekend where everyone enjoys themselves and promotes non-violence. There will be a five-on-five street ball tournament, youth all-star game and three-point contest.
“I feel like it does have a positive impact on the community just for the simple fact that this is such a small community that everybody knows everybody, especially in the industry in a lot of the areas where the tournament happens,” said Jernigan, who would add he always plans on organizing this event no matter where he’s working.
