BLOOMINGTON – Just before he runs onto the field — just as you remember his jersey number; such is the often-solitary life of a kicker — Charles Campbell follows the same routine.
First, he says a short prayer. Campbell needs to be relaxed when he kicks, calm almost to the point of empty headspace, and the quiet moment soothes him. Then a quick hip shake.
“After that,” he said, “it’s go time.”
Affable, if competitive to a fault, and just the second Army All-American ever to sign with Indiana, Campbell has become one of the most trustworthy placekickers in the Big Ten.
