NEW CASTLE, Ind. — In one of the most highly anticipated matches of the day, perhaps the season, No. 1 New Castle knocked off defending Class 4A champion and No. 2-ranked Yorktown in four sets 25-23, 25-21, 18-25, 25-22.
The Trojans took the first two sets thanks to a strong presence from Mabrey Shaffmaster, Melani Shaffmaster and Laila Smith at the net. Yorktown won the third set, handing New Castle its first set loss since it was swept in two sets against Assumption (Kentucky) on Sept. 7.
But the Trojans rallied and, after falling behind early in the fourth set, took a 6-5 lead that it would not relinquish the rest of the match.
