MUNCIE, Ind. — New Castle held off a late Central rally to prevail 3-2 at Bottorff Field on Wednesday.
Two freshmen — one from each team — shined. New Castle's Brandon Matney tossed five innings of one-run ball to earn the win. On the other side, the Bearcats' Ryan Johnson went 3-for-3.
Drew Barber provided the pop for the Trojans (8-4), going 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs.
Central's top hitter, Xavier Cleaves (.421 batting average), showed his versatility with a solid outing on the mound. He went 5 1/3 innings while allowing two earned runs.
