MUNCIE, Ind. — The phone call came into Gibson’s Skating Arena in the wee hours Saturday morning. Around 1:30 a.m., Becky Hazelbaker called Phil Hazelbaker over and put their son Jeremy on speaker.
They had been waiting for this. They were still at the skating rink, which has been owned by Becky’s family since 1967, since it was a “late skate.” As Jeremy’s final spring training game with the Arizona Diamondbacks wrapped up in Phoenix on Friday night, they were all anxious to find out his fate: Did he make an Opening Day roster for the second straight season?
