YORKTOWN, Ind. — Jeff Berger thought his coaching days were over.
He had resigned from his position as Cowan softball’s head coach after the 2013 season after five years leading the program so in 2014 he could enjoy his daughter’s senior year playing for Wheeling Jesuit University. He wasn’t looking for another opportunity.
But with the 2015 softball season approaching Jeff Masters, Berger’s assistant at Cowan those five seasons, called him up. Yorktown’s head coaching job was open. The two had never discussed what they might do if an opportunity at a larger school came up. Masters didn’t even know if Berger would be interested, only mentioning it in passing and somewhat jokingly.
