MUNCIE, Ind. — It’s the spring of 2019, and Ball State football’s coaching staff needs to find someone who can start at free safety.
With injuries hampering BSU’s efforts the previous fall, and with injuries causing issues that spring, defensive backs coach Mike Dietzel said looking back he didn’t know who was going to start alongside strong safety Bryce Cosby. They felt they needed to fortify their safety room.

So, first coaches threw around names of skill players on the offensive side of the ball, at wide receiver and running back, who could make the move.
