YORKTOWN, Ind. — Smiling, soaking in sunshine amid a cloudless 80-degree day, local families affected by cancer supported one another at SmashCancer 2022.
Delta girls tennis head coach Tim Cleland started the SmashCancer match over a decade ago, hoping to raise just a few hundred dollars. Ten events later, and despite two rain delays, Thursday's outing between the Eagles and the Tigers at Yorktown High School raised between $14,000-16,000, possibly marking yet another all-time high amount.
SmashCancer has generated over $70,000 in total donations since its inception, all given to local families and cancer beneficiaries. This year's recipients include the IU Health Ball Memorial Cancer Center, Little Red Door Cancer Services of East Central Indiana, the family of Delta junior Megan Hiday, the family of Yorktown second-grader Kavry Jester, and others.
