MUNCIE, Ind. — Laying in a hospital bed, the morphine kicking in, Jarrett Randolph’s competitive nature couldn’t help but shine through.
“I beat the record,” he told his dad.
That record was set in gym class, when Randolph ran the 20-yard dash in 2.7 seconds. But it came with a price. A freak accident at the end of that sprint lacerated his kidney and sent him into surgery later that night.
It sounded like the end of a career for Randolph, a senior on the Wapahani basketball team.
“When you’re sitting in the hospital room, you’re hoping that it’s just bruised ribs or something like that,” Randolph’s dad, Tony, said.
