McDermott, a redshirt freshman, improved to 4-0 on the year by pitching 6 shutout innings with just 4 hits and 2 walks allowed. He struck out 8 and left the game with Ball State leading 9-0.
Ball State (20-11, 5-2) cashed in on CMU's uncharacteristic mistakes. Chippewa pitchers walked 8 and hit a batter, and 5 of those 9 giveaways resulted in Ball State runs. A pair of walks set up a 2-run single by in the 3rd, the key hit that gave the Cards an early 4-0 lead.
