MUNCIE, Ind. — Chayce McDermott joined a long line of BSU pitchers Monday who’ve been drafted by a Major League Baseball organization, after being selected in the 2021 MLB draft by the Houston Astros.
McDermott, a fourth-round compensation pick who went 132nd overall, is someone Ball State head coach Rich Maloney was confident would turn pro even before the 2021 season ended. McDermott is someone Maloney thought would have already embarked on his professional career, had the 2020 season not been cut short due to the pandemic. And now the potential Maloney saw in McDermott coming out of high school, as someone who could be a high selection, has become a reality.
