MUNCIE, Ind. — After interviewing at Ball State on Feb. 3, David Elson celebrated his mom's birthday in Indianapolis. That was a gift that hasn't come often for the Indianapolis native during coaching tenures in the midwest and across the country, from Western Kentucky to New Mexico State and Western Illinois.
Most years, all the Cardinals' new defensive coordinator would get is a phone call.
"It's always been a goal that if I could move closer to Indianapolis and my family there, coaching at the highest level possible, that would be ideal," Elson told The Star Press on Monday, after his hiring was announced.
