MUNCIE, Ind. — Throughout the day Sept. 3, although Mike Neu was focused on recruiting, there were moments where the Ball State football coach’s mind would drift and he’d think about what was originally scheduled to take place that day.
Neu, in his fifth year as head coach, was supposed to be leading his program in its 2020 season opener. The Cardinals, 15-33 so far in Neu’s tenure, were supposed to be facing Maine at Scheumann Stadium. But instead, at times that day, the disappointment set in.
Neu noticed when the pre-game meal would have happened. He noticed when he would have seen the ball fly through the air on the opening kickoff.
