BARCELONA, Spain -- MotoGP officials say Moto2 rider Luis Salom has died after crashing during practice for the Catalunya Grand Prix on Friday. He was 24.
The death was announced at a news conference at the Barcelona circuit.
Doctors said the Spaniard underwent emergency surgery but did not survive because of the severity of his injuries.
The crash happened in Turn 12, a right-hander near the end of the track.
Images showed Salom's bike slide across the track and the rider collide with the safety barrier.
Salom won nine Moto3 races in his career and finished second in the 2012 Moto3 standings.
