Former Florida Gators head coach Will Muschamp is unlikely to return to the Auburn Tigers for a second season as the program's defensive coordinator, and he may be leaving for his second head coaching shot in the SEC.
Muschamp has already been contacted by South Carolina Gamecocks officials who were gauging interest in their current head coaching vacancy, and he's scheduled to meet and interview with university officials later this week. Muschamp, 44, compiled a 28-21 record at Florida before he was fired after the 2014 season.
Other names connected to potential interviews right now are former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano and current Arizona Wildcats head coach Rich Rodriguez. Neither has been confirmed as a candidate for the job as of this time. The Gamecocks already interviewed interim coach Shawn Elliott, and there's also reports floating around that the team is interested in Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley.
As for Muschamp, his extensive background as both a coach and a recruiter in the SEC has piqued South Carolina's interest. Muschamp has coached 16 seasons out of his 20-year career in the conference.
He coached under Nick Saban at LSU and has had two coordinator stints at Auburn to go with his head coaching work at Florida. Of the seven season that he's been a defensive coordinator in the conference, his units have posted Top-15 finishes in total defense six times.
