Why have Auburn’s oaks at Toomer’s Corner become a target?

For more than 70 years the oak trees at Toomer’s Corner served as a focal point of Auburn’s camps. For roughly 40 years they were incorporated into fans’ post-game football celebrations.

In 2010, after decades of standing unmolested, a deranged Alabama fan poisoned them to death following Auburn’s victory over the Tide. New oaks were planted in 2015 and the university announced before this season that fans could resume their tradition of rolling the oaks this fall. Last night, during just the second opportunity Auburn fans have had to “roll” the trees following a win, another deranged individual set one of them on fire.
