Growing up in Pennsylvania with 14 brothers and sisters, Chantel Tremitiere learned to fend for herself. She also learned to be fearless.
“You learned to share,” she says with a broad smile, “and you learned to eat quickly.”
She also learned to adjust to hardship when her adopted parents divorced, leaving most of the children with her mother.
But nothing could prepare Tremitiere, who played basketball for Auburn legend Joe Ciampi in the late 80s, for what happened when she returned to the Plains more than 20 years after graduation to earn a master’s degree.
