Auburn has consistently been a top-level offense each and every year that coach Malzahn has been on the Plains. Yet, it has been labeled as anything but elite. Pundits have called it “gimmicky”. Some have said that it is “tailored for the personnel on the roster.” One thing is certain, no one considers Malzahn’s HUNH offense as being in the same realm as a Baylor or Oregon offense, despite his having reached the national championship twice and beating one of the aforementioned offensive powerhouses in the process. Most football purists might hesitate to call the Malzahn HUNH offense “gimmicky” but most would also agree that Malzahn’s best jobs as a play caller have been in seasons where he adjusted the game plan to fit the strengths of a mostly inherited team.
