AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn senior All-SEC Matt Gilchrest, who made his PGA Tour debut in The Barbasol last month, finished third and was low amateur in the Texas State Open. In the Palmetto Amateur, sophomore Trace Crowe tied for second, senior Ryan Benton tied for fourth and junior Ben Schlottman tied for 29th.
Gilchrest finished at 15-under with a 71-67-65-67—270, three shots behind champion Juan Fernandez and 23 shots ahead of the next amateur in the field at The Lakes at Castle Hills in Lewisville, Texas.
The Southlake, Texas, native, the only amateur in the 132-player field Barbasol field, just missed the cut in his PGA Tour debut finishing 1-over 70-71—141, one stroke off the cut line.
