AUBURN, Ala. – Former Auburn basketball assistant coach Herbert Greene, 71, passed away Monday night after suffering a heart attack.
Greene was an assistant at Auburn from 1977-81 under coaches Bob Davis and Sonny Smith before spending 28 years at Columbus State as an athletic director and head basketball coach. He recruited All-American Charles Barkley, one of the top 50 players in NBA history.
“Herbert spent more time and made the first contact and did the majority of the work on Charles,” said former Auburn Hall of Fame coach Sonny Smith. “He was a great recruiter and probably a better on the floor coach.
