Over the course of writing a groundbreaking book on John Heisman’s years at Auburn, I’ve pretty much decided that the final days of the Victorian era are a sort of temporal Bermuda Triangle for southern football. Because in addition to things like Auburn’s win that wasn’t over Georgia (and our nine-years-later loss that wasn’t to LSU), there are at least three real, actual American football games–games that actually happened, that actual people paid actual money to see, that resulted in touchdowns and raised tempers and bruised hips and hip hip hooray‘s–that have either completely disappeared from the record books… or that, for whatever reason, were never actually added to them.
