Such is the case for Gus Malzahn with the New Orleans Saints firing five assistants, among them James Willis.
Willis served as a Saints’ defensive assistant, specializing in linebackers. Auburn fans will remember Willis, a Huntsville, Ala., native, as a 1992 All-SEC linebacker and member of the Tigers all-decade team of the 1990s.
This news coming on the heels of Auburn losing secondary coach Wesley McGriff to Ole Miss seems fortuitous in the extreme. Now is the time for Malzahn to use the vacancy on his defensive staff to bring the Auburn legend back to the Plains.
