Gus Malzahn must challenge himself when hiring a new offensive coordinator.
What I mean by that is Malzahn must hire a peer who he respects, someone who can challenge his thinking – respectfully – someone who Malzahn can learn from.
That wasn’t Rhett Lashlee. Malzahn can’t repeat that error.
Lashlee was more of a son to Malzahn than a colleague and he certainly wasn’t a peer. Lashlee played for Malzahn in high school, essentially tagging along with him as Malzahn shot up the coaching ranks. Lashlee was 29-years-old when Malzahn named him Auburn’s offensive coordinator.
That’s ridiculous.
