Since becoming Auburn’s coach after the 2012 season, Gus Malzahn has landed three Alabama “Mr. Football” winners at running back.
One panned out – Kerryon Johnson. He rushed for 1,391 yards and 18 touchdowns in earning SEC offensive player of the year honors this past season.
One didn’t – Roc Thomas. He transferred to FCS school Jacksonville State in 2016 after rushing for just 475 yards and three rushing touchdowns in two seasons at Auburn.
The latest is Asa Martin, who is a four-star prospect who already has enrolled and will go through spring practice. With Johnson and Kamryn Pettway leaving early for the NFL draft, Martin will get a chance to compete for playing time in 2018.
