Zane Grothe finished 8th in the 800m freestyle and Marcelo Chierighini advanced to the finals of the 100m freestyle on Wednesday at the FINA World Championships in Budapest.
Grothe, who swam at Auburn from 2010-14, clocked a 7:52.43 as the only American in the final 8. Gabriele Detti of Italy won gold in 7:40.77.
Chierighini, who also swam for Auburn from 2010-14, will swim for gold in Thursday’s 100m freestyle finals after finishing eighth in the semifinals with a 48.31. He had advanced to the semis after placing in a four-way tie for fifth in prelims with a time of 48.
