Among the stats that Auburn fans, myself included, kept throwing out when Will Muschamp was hired revolved around his accomplishments in his first tenure as Auburn’s defensive coordinator. In 2007, shortly before he left to take the DC job at Texas, the Tigers were ranked 6th in the nation in total defense, which was the best mark in the SEC. That far exceeded the next SEC team, LSU, which checked in at 21st. The 2007 unit gave up under 17 points and 300 yards per game without being among the leaders in sacks, interceptions, and fumble recoveries.
What did that mean?
