Auburn hires its new defensive coordinator

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn didn’t waste much time talking about his new defensive coordinator: Malzahn brought up the hiring of Kevin Steele during the post-game news conference following the Tigers’ Birmingham Bowl win over Memphis on Wednesday afternoon.

Steele, 57, replaces Will Muschamp, who left after one season to become South Carolina’s coach.

Steele was LSU’s DC this season, and his new job at Auburn means he will have been a coordinator at four schools. He was Alabama’s DC in 2007 in Nick Saban’s first season with the Tide and also served in that role at Clemson from 2009-11.
