There is no discounting the Iron Bowl as the biggest game of any season for Auburn. But the rivalry against the team from Athens hasn’t deteriorated and is coined, as we all know, as “The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry.”
Auburn and Georgia first met on February 20, 1892. Yes, they played in February in Atlanta and in Piedmont Park. The Tigers pulled away for a 10-0 victory.
One of the more memorable games in the long history of the rivalry was in 1971, when Auburn (8-0) visited Georgia (9-0), which was coached by former Auburn player Vince Dooley.
