Auburn basketball guard Mustapha Heron was recently named to the SEC Community Service Team in an effort for the SEC to recognize what student-athletes are achieving off the court. He has been recognized as a community service leader for not only Auburn, but for his hometown in Connecticut as well.
Heron’s community service efforts have gone relatively unnoticed from the broadcast of Auburn games, yet its effects are definite and influential.
Here is a listing of some of his community service:
- Established the Mustapha Heron Skills Academy and Reading Program for his high school in Waterbury, Connecticut, with the utilization of sponsorship from Under Armor and Adidas
- Teaches the importance of balancing schoolwork and sport while rewarding those who read books with incentives including shoes and bags
- Worked with his hometown Police Department to develop a weapons buy-back program, using his AAU Team with orange emblems on its jerseys to make a statement against gun violence
- Involvement with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes
- Donation to the Toys for Tots Holiday Program through Auburn University’s SAAC Program
His ability to work both off and on the court shows his insistence to utilize not only his presence as a star on the Plains for the better of his community, he also strives for greatness.
