What seems like ages ago, back before I was writing here, I wrote an article called “Why Auburn Needs Jeremy Johnson to Succeed” (Best5Zach Outdoors blog). I noted that Coach Malzahn had yet to recruit and develop a winning QB. Before you laugh, read the post and really think about the question.
Gus Malzahn, even before Johnson, hadn’t recruited and developed a QB in to a winner. His successes have been taking someone else’s recruits and developing a game plan around their strengths. It is worth mentioning that Malzahn has now spent more time at Auburn than any other school, but it is hard to fault his recruiting failures based on his time at Auburn.
