The Auburn Tigers have officially hired LSU Tigers defensive coordinator Kevin Steele for the same position under head coach Gus Malzahn, per an announcement on the university's official Twitter account for the program.
"We're extremely excited to have a guy with his experience, his character, his work ethic," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. "He'll fit in very good and I think he's got a chance. He's going to take over a very talented group. We're excited.
NOLA.com reports that Steele has been offered a three-year deal worth $4 million. LSU was willing to match that contract value, and a LSU source even told the Baton Rouge Advocate that it would retain the first-year Tigers coordinator after his contact with Auburn.
Steele, 57, came to LSU after a two-year stint working under Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban, including a year as the team's linebackers coach. Prior to that, Steele was the defensive coordinator at Clemson from 2009-11.
The former LSU coordinator earned $1,005,000 in his first year of a two-year deal. His contract includes a $500,000 buyout, which Auburn and Steele plan to split.
