Former Florida Gators head coach Will Muschamp has agreed to become the Auburn Tigers' defensive coordinator, multiple sources reported on Friday night.
According to Chris Low and Mark Schlabach of ESPN.com, "sources told ESPN.com that Muschamp will become the highest-paid coordinator in college football, as Auburn will pay him more than $1.5 million per season."
Muschamp, who posted a 28-21 record in four years as the Florida Gators' head coach, chose the position at Auburn after interviewing for a head coaching spot at the University of Houston. He was also reportedly courted for defensive coordinator slots at Texas A&M and South Carolina.
This will be Muschamp's second stint with the program, as he was also Auburn's defensive coordinator in 2006-07 under Tommy Tuberville.
Muschamp replaces former Auburn defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson, who was fired after Auburn finished just 59th among FBS teams in total defense (388.7 yards per game), 82nd in pass defense (239.2 yards) and 46th in rushing defense (149.5 yards) in 2014. Auburn was also just 59th in scoring defense, giving up 26.1 points per contest.
