The Auburn Tigers barely survived an upset bid from Jacksonville State last week, but they're still undefeated and are looking to pick up their first SEC win of the season against LSU on Saturday. Here are three reasons why they'll do just that:
3) Talented, motivated defense
Defensive coordinator Will Muschamp is already making waves in recruiting for the Tigers, but it's his track record as a defensive mastermind which has everyone buzzing.
"I think he’s one of the best or the best defensive minds in all of football," head coach Gus Malzahn said recently. "We’re very fortunate to have him, and he’s going to build this defense like he needs. "I think if you look at his track record, he gets it done everywhere he’s been. I think we’re set up staff-wise to be a contender every year."
People tend to forget that Muschamp built an elite defense out of chewing gum and baling wire in Gainesville, and he's doing even better at Auburn. This could be their coming out party because...
2) LSU's offense is a one-man show
Running back Leonard Fournette is a beast for the Tigers, but their offense is on track to be one of the worst in college football again because of their horrid quarterback play. LSU passed for just 71 yards against Mississippi State, and Auburn's pass defense is definitely more talented. Tigers QB Brandon Harris will struggle mightily, and that will allow Auburn to control the game.
1) Guz Malzhan
Yes, Auburn's offense hasn't looked as good as we know they can be, but Malzahn is too smart, too motivated, and too good of a coach to keep this going much longer. The Tigers will get things turned around sooner rather than later, and LSU's young defense - who gave up nearly 400 yards to Mississippi State - is the perfect team for Auburn to exploit.
Malzahn will make sure Jacksonville State serves as a wakeup call for this team rather than an indication of the type of team they'll be.
