Atlanta United are back in the Concacaf Champions League for the second straight year. The Five Stripes clinched a spot in the federation’s championship tournament thanks to winning the 2019 U.S. Open Cup against Minnesota United.
It’s a welcome return for a hungry club looking to atone for a bitter dismissal from their first-ever foray into the highly competitive tournament. After winning their first ever match-up against Costa Rican side Herediano in the Round of 16, they were eliminated by Liga MX powerhouse Monterrey in the quarterfinals.
While it was a rude awakening to just how good Mexican clubs are in this competition and overall, it served as great experience that would go on to prepare Atlanta for a huge Campeones Cup win over Club America later in the season.
