During the 2020 offseason, the Atlanta Hawks moved to address their backup point guard woes, signing veteran Rajon Rondo to a two-year contract worth $15 million. While Rondo’s regular season play in recent years did not align with that kind of investment, the 35-year-old excelled in the playoffs for the Los Angeles Lakers — helping the team win a championship — and Rondo’s locker room influence as a mentor was well-chronicled both in the lead up to the agreement and after the Hawks announced his addition. However, Rondo’s play on the court has not been stellar in 2020-21 and, just before Thursday’s NBA trade deadline, Travis Schlenk and the Hawks agreed to a deal to send Rondo to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for former Hawks guard Lou Williams.
