Atlanta and Washington both traded long runs in the first half, but it was the Wizards who took a 47-41 lead into the break. The Hawks responded with a strong third quarter to recapture the lead, yet Washington came back again and took a nine-point lead late in the fourth quarter.
However, Atlanta wasn't done as they took the lead again with less than two minutes to play, and after a Paul Pierce three-pointer with eight seconds left appeared to give the Wizards the win, Al Horford drained a putback layup with two seconds remaining to seal the victory.
Turning Point:
After a slow start to the fourth quarter in which the Hawks scored one point in the first five and a half minutes, Atlanta reeled off a 14-0 run to take a five point lead with two minutes left.
Key Stat:
Washington had plenty of opportunities on the offensive end, but they just couldn't capitalize on anything. The Wizards shot a lowly 37.9 percent from the field in this game, including 25 percent from three-point range.
Atlanta MVP:
Al Horford did all he could for the Hawks in this one, notching 21 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks. Jeff Teague (14 points, five assists) and Paul Millsap (14 points, seven rebounds) also had a big impact in this one.
Washington MVP:
John Wall had a great game despite playing with five fractures in his hand and wrist, recording 15 points, seven assists, and four steals. Bradley Beal also played really well with 23 points and seven rebounds.
