Matt Ryan: Falcons zone scheme will be fine despite banned chop blocks

After the NFL changed the rules and completely eliminated chop blocks last month, some wondered if it might deter offenses that feature zone blocking schemes.

The Atlanta Falcons implemented an outside-zone blocking scheme last year under first-year offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and saw Pro Bowl running back Devonta Freeman have a breakout season with 1,061 yards and 11 rushing touchdowns.

Since chop blocking is a form of cut blocking, will the Falcons be affected by the new rule? Quarterback Matt Ryan doesn't believe so.

"That will be something I'm sure our coaches will work through," Ryan said.
