Both teams played a sloppy first half where the defenses dominated, but the Falcons took a 6-3 lead into halftime. Atlanta scored 10 straight points in the third quarter, and it looked like they were going to run away with the victory.
However, the Panthers looked like different team in the fourth quarter and scored two early touchdowns to take the lead. The Falcons responded with a field goal late that won the game.
Turning Point:
After the Panthers took the lead, Atlanta drove down the field to set up what would be the game-winning field goal. Matt Bryant drained it for the Falcons, and their defense held the Panthers from that point on to grab the win.
Key Stat:
Quarterback Cam Newton threw two early interceptions for the Panthers, which the Falcons were able to turn into points and build their big lead.
Atlanta MVP:
Quarterback Matt Ryan moved the Falcons up and down the field against a good Panthers defense, and made plays down the stretch when his team needed it. He completed 31/45 passes for 268 yards and a touchdown on the day.
Carolina MVP:
Newton had a slow start, but he was able turn his play around late to make this a game. He finished with 292 yards and two touchdowns, along with 26 rushing yards.
What’s Next?
Atlanta returns home to face the Cleveland Browns next Sunday, while Carolina has a bye week before facing Minnesota.
