Former Saginaw Heritage and Nebraska star Spencer Schwellenbach made Major League Baseball history Friday despite settling for no decision in a 5-3 Atlanta Braves win over Miami.
Schwellenbach left the game after seven innings with the Braves trailing 3-2. Atlanta scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to give Atlanta reliever Aaron Bummer the win, the Braves’ fourth consecutive victory.
But Schwellenbach made history, becoming the first pitcher in the modern era to record 70 strikeouts with 10 or fewer walks in the first 11 appearances of his MLB career.
The Atlanta rookie allowed three runs on two homers in the first three innings before shutting out the Marlins in the next four innings.
