Reese Olson threw six shutout innings, but the Atlanta Braves picked up a couple of runs late to beat the Detroit Tigers 2-1 in the series opener Monday night at Truist Park.
The Tigers (34-38) and Braves (39-31) play twice more this week.
Olson, pitching in his home state for the first time as a big-leaguer, struck out eight without issuing a walk in a performance more reminiscent of his dominance in April and May.
In three June starts before Monday, Olson allowed 18 runs on 28 hits in 14 2/3 innings.
Unfortunately, lack of run support from his teammates was another staple of those starts in April and May.
